What is your definition of "ultimate selfishness"? Unless, I know what how you approach the concept of "selfishness", I can't really address this question. There are two approaches: the first one is the literal one as stated in the dictionary which I denote as a negative characteristic. Another one is the much discussed in modern-philosophy circles where it is suggested that an individual who is puts their self-interest first when making decisions will make the most honest decisions. But it must be noted that per this concept, such an individual treats others as no different than self. Hence, the "selfish" motives of their actions does not cause an inconvenience to another!
My interpretation of this quote is that, I think it is an extension of the Vedic notion - "Pinda-Brahmanda Tattva" which is also reinforced by the Sikh Gurus in the Gurbani which I think says, "Soi Pinde, Soi Brahmande" (I may have phrased it wrong).. which essentially means, our body/self is a microcosmic reflection of the Universe. We are a Universe in our self complete with the "Om" residing within as the "Atma"!
Again, my explanation is strictly based on my interpretation and opinion and the words of Gita are far too magnificent to be captured by just one person's interpretation!
